👨💻 Introduction
Starting out as a developer is exciting, but let’s be honest — it can also be overwhelming. Looking back, there are so many things I wish someone had told me when I first started my journey in tech.
If you're just beginning, or even a few years in, this post is a reality check, motivation boost, and honest guide all in one.
Here are the 10 things I wish I knew before becoming a developer 👇
1. 💻 You Don’t Need to Know Everything
When you're new, it feels like you need to master every language, framework, and tool.
The truth? You don’t.
🔑 Learn the fundamentals and specialize later. Tech changes — logic and problem-solving stay.
2. ⏱️ Learning Takes Time — And That’s Okay
You won’t become a senior dev in 6 months. And that’s normal. Real growth happens over time, through experience and struggle.
Take it slow. Stay consistent.
3. 🐞 Bugs Are a Part of Life
Bugs aren’t failures — they’re part of the learning process. Every error teaches you something, even if it’s just how not to do something.
4. 🔄 You’ll Keep Learning Forever
Technology evolves constantly. Even 10-year veterans are learning something new every day.
The best mindset? Become a lifelong learner.
5. 💬 Communication > Code (Sometimes)
Being a developer isn't just about writing code. It’s about understanding problems, collaborating with teams, and explaining your solutions clearly.
Good communication makes you a great developer.
6. 🌐 Google Is Your Best Friend
Don’t feel bad about Googling how to reverse a string or use a forEach
. Every developer — even the experienced ones — use search daily.
7. 🚫 Tutorial Hell Is Real
At some point, you need to stop watching tutorials and start building on your own. That’s where the real growth happens.
Start small. Make mistakes. Learn.
8. 📦 Git Is Not Optional
Version control might seem scary at first, but Git is an essential tool. The earlier you start using it, the better.
Pro tip: Start every project with git init
.
9. 😰 Impostor Syndrome Never Fully Goes Away
That voice saying “you’re not good enough” — it doesn’t disappear, it just gets quieter. What matters is you keep going anyway.
10. 🙌 The Dev Community Is Amazing
Twitter, GitHub, Stack Overflow, Discord, Reddit — the tech world is full of people willing to help, guide, and support.
Don't be afraid to ask, share, or connect. You’re never alone on this journey.
🚀 Final Thoughts
If you’re just getting started in tech:
👉 Be kind to yourself.
👉 Keep building.
👉 Stay curious.
👉 And never forget — every expert was once a beginner.
